An excellent original WW1 British army issue gas warning rattle. Used in the trenches to warn of an incoming gas attack. The rattle has at some point been long ago painted white with a red. Most likely post war done although we have had them in these colours in the past and currently have another from a totally different source which is also in red and white (see photos) Possibly done by the military for some reason? It looks good. The metalwork is in good order. everything is good and tight. The wooden clapper looks in good order and rattles loudly. The wooden cog is excellent with just a few very minor edge nicks. The wooden grip is in great condition and marked JTB 1918. The bottom of the grip is also marked with the WD arrow and some numbers but hard to make out. All is in good order.
