173) A nice original WW1 British army officers issue Verner’s Patent VIII marching compass with issue case. The case is tatty and worn, one side cover has come unstitched and is missing and several of the side loops are long since gone. The closure strap and buckle show surface wear and cracking but still good and strong. it is nicely dated 1918 and marked “Capt E.Birch I.V. R W Kent. The other side has hand written “E.G.Birch”. The compass is in good order with much original finish. The dial is good and works well. Some of the material inside the case has fallen from the glass and dial but does not seem to be inside the case. The base dates it to 1918.
